U.S. stocks finished mostly higher Wednesday.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney)

Once again, the fiscal cliff negotiations in Washington will take center stage for investors on Thursday.

President Obama told members of the Business Roundtable Wednesday that there has been "some movement" on the Republican side toward allowing rates to rise on high-income taxpayers. If this continues, he said, "we can probably solve this in about a week."

Obama was adamant that going over the fiscal cliff for political purposes would harm the economy by jeopardizing America's credit rating.

Also on the agenda Thursday, the government will release data on initial jobless claims at 8:30 a.m. ET, and the European Central Bank will announce its latest interest rate decision at 7:45 a.m. ET. The bank is expected to leave rates unchanged, though investors will be listening to comments from ECB head Mario Draghi for any hint of a cut in rates next year.

U.S. stocks finished mostly higher Wednesday, but stock futures were pointing to a negative open on Thursday.

In corporate news, firms including lululemon athletica (LULU) and Smithfield Foods (SFD, Fortune 500) are scheduled to release their quarterly results in the morning.

Fear & Greed Index

European markets were up in morning trading, with Nokia leading the way after China Mobile agreed to sell the Finnish company's Lumia 920 handset. Asian markets ended mixed, showing little unified movement as Japan's Nikkei got a boost from a weakening yen and new polls ahead of election day. To top of page
