Stocks struggle to recover momentum

U.S. stocks fell Wednesday.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney)

Apart from Wal-Mart (WMT, Fortune 500), Chesapeake Energy (CHK, Fortune 500) and Safeway (SWY, Fortune 500) are among those due to report fourth-quarter results in the morning. Hewlett-Packard (HPQ, Fortune 500) is up after the bell.

On the economic front, reports on inflation and initial jobless claims are due at 8:30 a.m. ET. At 10:00, the National Association of Realtors will release data on existing home sales, while the Philadelphia branch of the Federal Reserve will release its monthly business outlook survey.

U.S. stocks ended lower Wednesday after Federal Reserve meeting minutes raised worries the central bank might scale back its bond-buying program. U.S. stock futures were weaker Thursday after a flash eurozone Purchasing Managers' Index reading came in below expectations.

Fear & Greed Index still showing extreme greed

Tesla (TSLA) shares sank in after-hours trading Wednesday after the electric-car maker posted a wider-than-expected loss for the fourth quarter.

European markets fell sharply in morning trading on concerns about tighter monetary policy in the U.S. and the disappointing PMI data. Asian markets ended weaker, also following the U.S. lead. The Shanghai Composite lost 3.0%, the Nikkei fell 1.4% and the Hang Seng declined 1.7%. To top of page
