Stocks: All about the jobs report

NEW YORK (CNNMoney)

U.S. stock futures were broadly unchanged ahead of the release, though there was a slight positive bias in the numbers.

The Labor Department's April jobs report comes out at 8:30 a.m. ET. Economists surveyed by CNNMoney predict the U.S. added 205,000 new jobs, bringing the unemployment rate down to 6.6% from 6.7% in March.

"Anything between 175,000 and 250,000 [jobs] or so is risk-friendly and could propel the S&P 500 through 1900 at last," said Kit Juckes, a market strategist from Societe Generale (SCGLF).

European markets were awaiting the U.S. jobs report and were little changed in morning trading. New data showed eurozone unemployment remained steady at 11.8% in March, unchanged since December.

Shares in the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) were surging in London by roughly 12% after the bank reported better-than-expected results.

"All trends for this bank are going in the right direction," said Jefferies equity analyst, Joseph Dickerson.

Shares in AstraZeneca (AZN) fell by nearly 1% in London after the company rejected an improved bid for the British company from Pfizer (PFE, Fortune 500)worth £50.00 ($84.47) per share, or $106.4 billion. Pfizer shares were inactive premarket.

"The financial and other terms described in the proposal are inadequate, substantially undervalue AstraZeneca and are not a basis on which to engage with Pfizer," AstraZeneca said in statement.

Back in the U.S. corporate world, Chevro (CVX, Fortune 500) and CVS (CVS, Fortune 500) are among the companies reporting earnings before the bell.

U.S. stocks closed mixed Thursday. The Dow Jones industrial average and S&P 500 closed slightly lower, failing to hit new record highs. The Nasdaq logged modest gains thanks to rebounding social networking stocks.

Asian markets mostly moved forward Friday, but the gains were modest.
